April 11th – Natural Pigments – Students will learn different ways natural pigments can be incorporated into their art. This includes coffee and tea stains, Alabama clay pigments and rust patterning techniques. Students will experiment with all the techniques mentioned above to create works of art to take home.
*Materials provided for class: tea, coffee, Alabama clay pigment, Gum Arabic, acrylic medium, materials required for rusting, variety of paper and fabric for experimentation
Materials to bring: paintbrush, rusted object, paper (preferably watercolor) or fabric
April 18th – Image Transfers – Students will learn basic image transfer techniques as well as how to incorporate this technique into their art.
*Materials provided for class: gel medium, wintergreen oil, xeroxed copies of images for experimentation, paper for transfers, burnishing tools
Materials to bring: paintbrush, an old picture frame (preferably a tacky one), xeroxed copies of images for transfers
April 25th – Stamps and Stencils – Students will learn several ways to create stamps and stencils as well as how to incorporate them into their artwork. Students will create works of art using stamps and stencils to take home.
*Materials provided for class: plastic, wood blocks, foam, potatoes, mat board, yarn, erasers, carving tools, glue, paper
Materials to bring: thin sharpie, xacto knife, surface on which to experiment
May 2nd – Altered Books – Students will learn about the art of altered books as well as a variety of techniques they can incorporate into an altered book. This includes staining, sewing and cutting as well as some simple bookbinding strategies. Students will get started on their own altered book.
*Materials provided for class: wintergreen oil, stamps, variety of paper, sewing materials, glue
Materials to bring: an old book to alter (preferably hardcover and less than 300 pages), xacto knife, scissors, personal artifacts to incorporate (xeroxed copies of photos, paper, buttons etc.)
